Buddhapan Machine is an ongoing engagement with a lineage of audio reproduction devices colloquially referred to as "pre-loaded speakers", "buddha machines" or "chanting boxes".

Most of these devices are designed to perform one function: the looped playback of short audio materials, usually in the support of religious or devotional activities. In many cases, their use occurs in secular spaces but the passive effect of their use is to produce a constant and recognizable background sound element which functions as a marker of religion.

These devices occupy what I call "the blunt edge" of technology, evolving through generations (of technologies) in their own time, usually much after the cutting edge has shifted. Over the course of their evolution, the technologies have changed from tape-based systems to apps and expanded to cater to more and more religions, languages and use cases.

I have been writing about history, technology and intellectual property aspects of these technologies, circuit bending, and utilising these devices to facilitate what FM3 refer to as "Buddha Boxing" or ambient improvisations.

The technology can often be found associated with or marketed towards the elderly and those who have not yet developed a familiarity with smartphones.
